WIGAN and Leigh’s unsung heroes of sport were duly honoured at the eleventh annual Borough Sports Awards.
Coaches, teams and sports clubs gathered at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night for the award ceremony.
International gymnast, Craig Heap, was the special guest of honour at the event providing an insight in to his career and experiences of competing at the Olympic Games in Sydney.
A staggering 77 nominations were received with eight awards presented on the night including Astley and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club being named Club of the Year and Tyldesley RUFC Under 18’s Girls Team picking up Team of the Year.
The event was organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Executive Director for Healthy Living, Martin Eden said: “With London 2012 less than 12 months away there’s a real buzz in the air at the moment in our sporting community.
“Hearing from someone who has competed in the Olympics was an inspiration. This night is a celebration of all those outstanding contributors to sport in Wigan and Leigh and I’d like to congratulate them on their achievement.”
The 11th Annual Wigan Borough Sports Awards was sponsored by Ashton, Leigh and Wigan NHS and JJB Sports, as well as individual award sponsors Leigh Sports Village, Rose Leisure, Wigan Disability Sports Forum, Wigan Sports Development, the School Sports Partnership, Leigh Sports Trust, and Wigan Borough Sports Council.
