New pool

WIGAN town centre’s multi-million pound Life Centre will mark a milestone on Saturday 24 September as the new Healthy Living Zone opens for a public weekend of tours and free taster sessions.

Boasting a brand new 25 x 21 metre pool and state-of-the-art Profiles Health and Fitness Centre residents are being urged to tour round the new facilities on Saturday 24 September and Sunday 25 September.

Split on two sites, either side of Wigan Town Hall, the public opening of the south site will ensure residents have access to some of the best public leisure amenities in the country. The Healthy Living Zone in the building includes state-of-the-art Technogym equipment where gym members can “tweet”, watch TV and even search the internet while they work out.

There’s also a brand new pool, learners pool, steam and sauna room, fitness studios and gold standard disabled facilities.

When the North Site opens in the New Year the £217m Wigan Life Centre will include a one-stop shop for public services, an Information Zone, including a new public library and a Neighbourhood Zone marking the completion of a project that has been more than a decade in the making.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Chris Ready said: “This vision of unifying access to public services started 10 years ago. When this complex is complete this one-stop shop will modernize the way we deliver public services and set the borough apart from other areas.
“It will ensure quick and easy access to services that people need and want. It will be something Wigan is proud of and something to treasure.”

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) will manage the leisure facilities and the new library when it opens.

Chief Executive of WLCT Stuart Murray said: “This is an exciting addition to Wigan’s leisure offer. The facilities are first class and something the residents of Wigan should be justly proud of. This is a flagship site for us that will play a key role in encouraging more people in the borough to get active.”

The building opened its doors on Monday and a special weekend of activities will take place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September. Activities during the weekend of free sessions include - Thump Boxing, Body Pump, Indoor Cycling and Family Swimming.
