Two salons targeted
Thursday 21st July, 2011

Two Wigan tanning salons were targeted by armed robbers within an hour of each other.

At about 3.50pm on Sunday 17 July 2011, two men knocked on the door of the Hair and Tan shop on Ormskirk Road.

They were refused entry, but then kicked their way in. They then threatened the member of staff, a 34-year-old woman, and a customer, a 21-year-old woman. One of the offenders was holding a knife and demanding cash.

The offenders then decided to put on balaclavas.

The shop assistant struggled with one of the offenders as he attempted to steal property, who then punched her to the face.

The pair stole a portable DVD player and ran out of the shop, heading towards Alexandra Park.

At about 4.30pm the same day a man wearing a balaclava went into the Wigan Sun Centre on Norley Hall Avenue and threatened two members of staff at knifepoint.

He demanded cash from them which was stuffed into a JD sports bag. The offender then ran off.

In the first incident, one of the offenders was described as being white, about 5ft 3in tall, of slim build, in his late teens. The second man was described as being white, 5ft 5in tall, in his late teens and of stocky build. Both had short cropped hair and wore dark tracksuits.

The man at the Hair and Tan shop was white, about 5ft 5in tall, of slim build and in his late teens. He was again dressed in a balaclava and grey hooded top.

Detective Constable Matthew Higham said: "These were unnecessary, violent crimes that were carried out in broad daylight. It is only by good fortune that nobody was seriously injured.

⿿We are confident that there are people out there who can help these inquiries."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7248 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
