Woman hit by baseball bat-wielding robbers
Monday 6th June, 2011

A woman was hit with a baseball bat by robbers breaking into her home in Wigan.

At 10.45pm on Tuesday 31 May 2011, three men broke into the home of a 36-year-old woman on Rocky Bank Terrance, Lower Ince, by kicking the back door in.

She ran down the stairs on hearing the commotion and was hit with a baseball bat and dragged by her hair across the floor.

The robbers, who were armed with bats and pick axes, ran upstairs and assaulted the woman's husband, who was in bed.

They left by the back door and the woman discovered they had taken cash from her handbag, which had been in the lounge.

The three men were seen running towards a dark 4x4 parked at the bottom of an alleyway on Deakin Street. The vehicle was then observed driving off towards Banner Street.

Neither the victim nor her husband needed hospital treatment.

The first robber was described as a white man, aged 35, 6ft tall. He was wearing a dark hooded top.

The second was described as a white man, aged 30 to 32, 5ft 8in tall, of medium build with dark hair in a short back and sides cut. He was wearing a dark hooded top.

The third offender was described as a large built man, 5ft 11in tall. He was wearing a hooded top and had a balaclava covering his face.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on the night on suspicion of aggravated burglary and bailed until 4 July 2011, pending further inquiries.

Detective Constable John O'Donnell, based at the Priority Crime Team at Wigan Police Station, said: "We are doing our utmost to find these men as people living in our community should not fear something so terrifying happening to them as they prepare to go to bed.

"If you know or saw something, please contact us - we are particularly keen to find out the movements of the 4x4 both before and after the robbery."

Anyone with information is asked to call officers in Wigan on 0161 856 5308 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
