|Man jailed over death of Dylan Aaron - Hindley
Jailed - McGrail
A man has been jailed for causing the death of Dylan Aaron in Hindley.
Drew McGrail (18/01/1984) of Lancaster Avenue was found guilty of manslaughter and one count of criminal damage at Liverpool Crown Court.
He was today, Tuesday 24 May 2011, jailed for seven years.
Dylan Aaron died in the early hours of Sunday 30 May 2010, when he drowned in a pond in Wigan, while McGrail looked on.
There had been an ongoing dispute between the Aaron and McGrail families and when Dylan returned home from a night out around 3am that morning, he noticed his father's car had been damaged.
He knew McGrail would be at the pond and believed he was responsible so went with a friend to confront them.
A fight started at the pond. Drew and Dylan were fighting and rolled down a hill.
Drew threw Dylan into the pond and threatened him to make him stay in the water.
Dylan tried to swim to the other side to get out but Drew ran round still shouting at him.
Dylan was in trouble in the water and other people at the pond realised how serious the situation was, two of them entered the water and tried to save him. It was around this time that the emergency services were contacted
When police, fire service and paramedics arrived, Dylan had not been seen above the water for some time. The fire and rescue water incident unit were called but could not find him.
The underwater search team was called and Dylan was recovered from the water around 8.05am.
Drew had left but was arrested close by.
Senior Investigating Officer Vinny Chadwick of Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team said: "Dylan's death was easily avoidable had he been simply allowed to get out of the water.
"McGrail prevented him from getting out and this led to Dylan's early and tragic death leaving his family without the son and brother they loved.
"There were others at the scene who admirably tried to help Dylan but unfortunately were unable to do so."
