GCSE results are top of the class
Tuesday 24th August, 2010

Wigan Borough’s best ever set of GCSE results have just been announced with continued improvements in standards across the borough’s schools.

Figures released today show that results for 5A*-C including English and Maths have increased from 49 per cent in 2009 to 56 per cent in 2010, continuing a trend of improvements over the last few years.

The council’s target for this year is 55 per cent, and managers in the council’s Children and Young People’s Services are delighted that this has been surpassed. The stats for all 5A*-C grades show that attainment has increased gone from 70 per cent to 74 per cent

These results represent some significant improvements in individual school performances.

Jill Clarke, the council’s head of learning, says: “We are very encouraged by these results and see them as the outcome of hard work by both students and staff in Wigan schools and would wish to send congratulations to all concerned”.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for Children and Young People Cllr Susan Loudon adds: “This is great news and I applaud all these successful pupils for achieving their potential and my thanks to all those who have helped them along the way.”
