Asking Questions with More Than Words
Wednesday 7th July, 2010

Performers with learning disabilities from More Than Words Theatre Company will take centre stage at a special event that will ask people in Wigan what they think about future services.

The one day accessible and interactive consultation event, hosted by More Than Words and Wigan Council, will enable people with learning disabilities to have a real input in the Council’s Commissioning Strategy.

The day kicks off at 10.30am on Thursday July 8, St Peter’s Pavilion, Hindley , with a presentation led by members called ‘What is Consultation?’ This will be followed by an interactive consultation game which has been carefully designed to give people the opportunity to choose from a several categories and a long list of innovative suggestions about future services. People can pick and choose the type of services they would like to have to enable them to live more independently.

More Than Words use art, drama, dance, games and poetry to explain and express the views of other people, particularly those with more complex needs.

Councillor Keith Cunliffe, Healthier Communities and Older People Champion says “It’s really important that everyone living in the borough has a chance to tell the Council about the services they want in their communities. And, who better to ask, than the people who use them? This consultation process helps to create a market place full of providers delivering services that people want.

“We want to give people more choice and control over services through their personal budgets and direct payments. “We want to encourage people to live more independently within their own communities. The aim of the consultation process is to encourage people to tell the Council what will help them to do this.

“I would like to thank the talented stars of More Than Words for all their hard work in leading on this event.”
