A 17-year-old boy has died in a pond in Wigan
Sunday 30th May, 2010

A boy has died in a pond in Wigan.

Police were called to a pond on Lady's Lane shortly after 3.50am on Sunday 30 May 2010, following reports of an assault.

It was also reported a 17-year-old boy had gone into the water and had not been seen for some time.

The fire and rescue service water incident unit could not find the boy so the underwater search team was called.

The boy was found at 8.05am and recovered from the pond.

A post mortem examination is due to take place later today.

Another boy received minor injuries in an assault.

Superintendent Phil Unsworth of Greater Manchester Police said: "This is a tragic incident where a 17-year-old boy has lost his life in unexplained circumstances.

"Our investigation is still in the very early stages and there are a number of questions yet to be answered but a team of detectives are working hard to establish exactly what happened.

"We have been talking to the people who were at the pond last night and they have been extremely helpful, but there is still gaps we need to fill.

"If anyone has information about what happened or witnessed the incident and has not already been in touch with the police, then please don't hesitate to call.

"Finally, I want to commend the actions of those at the scene who tried to help save the boy.

"We have specially trained officers with the family now to help them through what has happened."

Two men aged 26 and 34 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and section 47 assault. They remain in police custody for questioning.

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 872 5050 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
