|Assault victim fighting for his life
A man is fighting for his life after he was brutally attacked in Wigan.
Police were called to Linney Square, Scholes, by an ambulance crew shortly before 6pm on Sunday 28 March 2010.
Officers attended and discovered a 47-year-old man had been punched to the ground. He was then kicked about the head and body before the offender dragged his limp body along the pathway.
The offender, described as white, of medium build and with a shaved head, ran off when passers by disturbed him.
It is thought he is local to the area and may have had a dog with him at the time.
A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed until 11 May 2010, pending further inquiries.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to 11 fractured ribs, fractures to his vertebrae, and cuts and bruises to his head, face and body. He has undergone surgery and is currently in a critical condition.
Detective Constable Craig Hurst, of Wigan CID, said: "This was a brutal attack that has left a man critically ill.
"At this stage it appears to be completely unprovoked and without motive and we are doing all we can identify the person responsible.
"I would urge anyone with information about this attack, regardless of how insignificant you think it might be, to get in touch.
"We will treat all information in confidence."
Anyone with information is asked to call Wigan CID on 0161 856 5307, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
