|Focus on Wigan - Security Award for CCTV Team
Michell Walling and Terry Bolton receive the award from Nicholas Owen and Suzanne Kenneally from award sponsor Commend UK Ltd.
WHEN it comes to keeping a watchful eye on crime and anti-social behaviour in our borough, Wigan Council's CCTV team is simply the best.
And to prove the town hall-based team has just picked up a major national security award.
The council's Risk Management and CCTV Section had previously been nominated for the Public Sector Security Award - organised by the Government Business Magazine and Public Sector Information.
The team was nominated for its commitment to putting security first and taking steps to improve safety for residents, visitors and council staff through use of CCTV cameras.
The awards ceremony was held at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium recently. Michell Walling and Terry Bolton from the team were on hand to represent the council at the ceremony and were delighted when they were called forward to collect the award from BBC television newsreader Nicholas Owen.
Wigan Councilís CCTV control room is dedicated to public space surveillance duties but also handles a number of commercial contracts for operations including bus and rail stations, car parks and offices. Monitoring a sizeable 600 plus camera system, the facility covers seven town centres, three shopping precincts, two residential areas and various private locations spread across a 77 square-mile area.
Service Manager Michell says: "It was a big honour for us just to be shortlisted for this award but to come out as the winner against some very stiff competition is fantastic.
"It is a testimony to the forward-thinking approach that Wigan has adopted when it comes to security. It has been a real team effort to ensure that Wigan Council is leading the field."
