Man tries to rob teenage girl - Wigan
Monday 29th March, 2010

A man tried to rob a teenage girl in Wigan.

At about 4pm on Wednesday 24 March 2010, the 13-year-old victim was on Alma Grove, Marus Bridge, when a man grabbed her from behind.

He put his hand over her mouth and demanded her purse.

The girl told him she did not have a purse so he let go of her and ran off.

As the man was running away, a cyclist in full high visibility gear was riding past.

The offender is described as a white man in his late teens or early 20s and 5ft 8in tall. He had black hair with a fringe hanging over his right eye, styled to a point. He was wearing a grey beanie hat, either a khaki green or grey zip-up top and skinny jeans.

Police Constable Darren Reid, based at Wigan Police Station, said: "The victim suffered only a small scratch to her face but quite a big fright at being grabbed from behind like this.

"Incidents like this are rare but I'm very keen to speak to the cyclist who was passing as the would-be robber ran off - if that was you or if anyone else knows something about this attack that might help us catch him, please contact me."

Anyone with information is asked to call police in Wigan on 0161 856 7255 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
