Growing Community Enterprise in Wigan and Leigh

The School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE), an innovative new people powered learning programme is coming to Wigan and Leigh to support local residents to develop and grow businesses and projects that will benefit local communities. Local residents with a good business or project idea, passion and motivation are urged to come along to the SSE road shows to find out more about how SSE can help them.

Wigan Borough Partnership through the Communities and Local Governments’ Working Neighbourhoods’ Fund has funded 20 places on the all new SSE programme which starts in May 2010. The programme will run over 12 months in various community locations across Wigan and Leigh and will focus on ‘learning by doing.’

Cllr David Molyneux, Deputy Leader of Wigan Council and Cabinet Champion for Regeneration and the Environment said:

“The role of social entrepreneurship in the ongoing economic growth and community development of Wigan and Leigh has huge potential. The SSE will provide local entrepreneurs with the knowledge, tools and skills to develop and grow their business idea, something which we welcome with open arms. We are extremely excited to support such a programme which will most definitely enhance our economic and social development.”

The programme includes business coaching, mentoring support, study sessions and opportunities to learn from some of the country’s leading Social Entrepreneurs. Participants on the programme will also receive assistance when applying for funding and branding their business.”

Cathy Varley, Learning Manager for SSE said:

“This is the very first programme to come to Wigan and Leigh and we have seen some real potential for social entrepreneurship in this area that can truly be enhanced by the personal and business development support programme that we offer.”
