|Couple celebrate 60 'diamond' years of happy marriage
Bessie and Dennis Halliwell
Local couple, Bessie and Dennis Halliwell celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at CLS Care Home, Golborne House in Golborne on 11 March. Bessie and Dennis say that they have enjoyed 60 wonderful years together and couldn’t have wished for a happier marriage. Unfortunately, the pair have lived apart since Bessie was admitted to the home nine months ago, but devoted husband Dennis visits her nearly every day.
On the day of their anniversary, Dennis arrived at the CLS-run home early so that he could spend the whole day with Bessie, who was waiting to greet him with a big kiss and a cuddle. Staff had prepared a special table, decorated with balloons, flowers and cards.
Home Manager, Karen Alford comments: “They are a lovely couple. Bessie came to stay at Golborne House when Dennis fell ill and could no take care of her. Dennis has become part of the home too – he visits Bessie most days and has got to know all of her friends here. He always has a cheery smile for everyone.”
Bessie (82) and Dennis (81), met at a wedding and married on 11 March 1950 at Leigh Parish Church. They have one son, two granddaughters and one great grandson. Dennis still lives at the family home in Lowton, Warrington, where the couple had lived together for over 15 years.
Bessie says that the secret to a happy and long marriage is “Dennis doing as he is told”, to which Dennis agrees.
