Lord Sugar officially opened the Wigan Skills Shop, Grand Arcade in the Town Centre today, Tuesday 2nd March.

The new state-of-the-art Wigan Skills shop could lead to a better future for the people of Wigan.

Based in the heart of The Grande Arcade (opposite River Island), the Skills Shop offers the very best advice and guidance on jobs and careers, qualifications, training and support with vital skills such as maths and English.

The Skills Shop offers free face-to-face advice with professionally trained advisors, internet access and online support with searching for job and training opportunities. It addition it offers young people advice and guidance through a Connexions advisor.

It also offers a training area and confidential meeting space along with an extensive library of reference books.

Lord Peter Smith, Leader of the Council says: “It is a real honour for Lord Sugar to officially open the Skills Shop today.

“Since we first opened the doors in August last year, we have had conducted more than 3,000 one- to-one’s with a quick turn around and supported over 300 people in to employment, often within five days. We have also been able to help hundreds of people learn new skills and specific training to help them reach their full potential.

“This ultra-modern advice and guidance service is the result of a partnership between Wigan Council, Wigan Leisure Trust, the Learning and Skills Council and the Grand Arcade and has certainly proved to be a winning formula.”

Lord Sugar, the Government’s Enterprise Champion, says: “The Wigan Skills Shop has clearly helped out a lot of people throughout the community and is an excellent example of both the public and private sector working in partnership. We can all learn a lot from a modern advice and guidance service as this one.”
