Unify Expansion
Wednesday 17th February, 2010

Unify Credit Union, Wiganís largest financial co-operative has announced today that they have received Planning Permission from Wigan Council to expand their services into Leigh town centre. Work is now underway to open the new shop at 12 Market Street, enabling Leigh residents to access low cost loans, safe savings and financial help and support.

Unify was established in 2002, when three small credit unions came together to form a boroughwide credit union. Carol Isherwood, chair of Unify and a Leigh resident for more than 50 years said ĎItís fantastic news that we are opening a main branch in Leigh. This is something we have wanted to do for some time and have secured funding from the Targeted Support Fund to enable us to realise our dream. Although we have had small collection points open for many years in and around Leigh, we knew that a full branch was needed to enable full access to the many services we provide.í

Unify membership has grown year on year and currently Unify has over 5000 members saving with them and borrowing from them. With loan interest of just 1% per month (12.7% APR) on the reducing balance, you would be hard pressed to find a better place to borrow from, particularly in the current credit crunch climate.

The new branch will open in March, once building works have been completed. Credit Unions are not for profit organisations authorised and regulated by the Financial Services in the same way as banks and building societies.
