|Trade is Good!

The borough’s very best traders are in town.
Around thirty local businesses, all of which are members of the council’s Good Traders Scheme, gathered this week for a ceremony to celebrate excellence in customer service led by senior councillors.
Launched just over a year ago by trading standards officers, the scheme allows the public to recommend firms which they feel are reliable and honest, so that people can find a tradesperson who they feel comfortable working with. A star rating system on the council’s website identifies good practice and the top scorers have now been rewarded by senior councillors and officers at the town hall.
Cllr Paul Prescott, cabinet champion for licensing, says: “There’s a bewildering choice of firms for people to turn to when they need work done at home. By registering with the council’s good trader website, firms are assessed honestly by their customers and people can make an informed choice.”
Trading standards officers were thrilled at the positive response to the scheme from the local business community. The ceremony is their chance to formally thank traders on behalf of the people of the borough. In addition to the awards for excellence, the 100th firm to sign up with the scheme will receive a special award as well on the night. Plan-It Construction, based in Wigan, were visited by Cllr Prescott just before Christmas and thanked for their success in the local community during a difficult time for the building industry.
Deputy Leader of Wigan Council, Cllr David Molyneux, has been leading efforts to support local businesses during a difficult time. “This is a thank you to many of the best local firms,” he says. “These companies have a good reputation and deliver results for people across our borough. Congratulations to them and also to their clients who have sent in feedback.”
