The £200 cigarette – Smoker cough’s up after litter snare
Tuesday 2nd February, 2010

There’s no smoke without…fine!

That’s the lesson one Marsh Green smoker has just learnt after a carelessly discarded fag end resulted in him being up before the bench.

Lewis Ashcroft of Comet Road, Marsh Green, was spotted dropping a cigarette butt outside Marsh Green library last June by a council officer.

And after being reported for the offence, Ashcroft was dealt with by Wigan Magistrates last week.
The Marsh Green man admitted the offence but did not attend at court, so was dealt with in his absence.
He was fined £85, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £15 and also ordered to pay £100 costs – a total of £200.
Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for the Environment Cllr Dave Molyneux says: “Smoking may be a bad habit but dropping your used cigarette end on the floor is an even worse one!

“It’s also an expensive one because in this case, just one cigarette ended up costing £200. We believe that people should be taking pride in their communities and in their borough which is why we are determined to clamp down on this sort of behaviour.

“There can be no excuses for dropping litter anywhere in our borough. You wouldn’t drop fag ends on your living room carpet so why do it on the street for other people to clean up after you.

“If we want our borough to be the best it can be then we all have to take responsibility for it. This case shows we are willing to take the appropriate action when people are caught dropping litter.”
