Go! With the Flow.
Monday 9th November, 2009

There’s a smoother traffic flow promised for Robin Park’s shops, following the intervention of deputy leader Cllr David Molyneux.

The bus lane on the Saddle Junction has attracted comment for its perceived lack of use, and council traffic planners have been looking at enhancements as part of wider plans for the Newtown roundabout.

But Cllr Molyneux, whose cabinet portfolio includes transport, wanted to improve the junction in time for Christmas. He has been discussing with engineers development plans to boost access to Robin Park.

“I felt that we could make a quick win for shoppers and businesses here,” said Cllr Molyneux. “Replacing the underused bus lane with a special left turn access for Robin Park-bound traffic will be an immediate help for retailers during the festive period and beyond.”

The bus lane will be changed to allow use by all vehicles this month. Further works will be carried out after Christmas.

“It’s been a tough year for retailers,” acknowledges Cllr Molyneux. “The council has worked hard to support employment and local firms and as a result, we have faired much better than many other parts of our region. Wigan is definitely open for business - and with good access and lively festive events planned, it’s the place to be this Christmas.”
