Thief steals from woman in wheelchair
Friday 6th November, 2009

Police are hunting a heartless thief who offered to help a wheelchair-bound elderly woman before stealing her handbag.

At about 4pm on Thursday 29 October 2009, the 68-year-old victim was at the shopping centre on Worsley Mesnes Drive, Wigan, when she was approached by the offender.

He asked her if she wanted some help with her shopping and offered to take her to a nearby chemist. While pushing the victim along Worsley Mesnes Drive he then stole the woman's handbag and ran off.

The victim was uninjured in the incident but left shocked and upset.

The offender is described as white, clean shaven, wearing a dark long sleeved hooded top and a coloured wristband.

PC Adam Fogarty, based at Wigan police station, said: "This shameless chancer used the victim's vulnerability against her and abused her trust in the most wicked way.

"It was a busy Thursday afternoon and there must have been plenty of fellow shoppers around at the time. If anyone saw a woman in a wheelchair being pushed by a man who fits the description then please get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to call Wigan police on 0161 856 7188 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
