Girl, 17, charged with cash machine theft
Wednesday 28th October, 2009

A teenager has been charged after people had money stolen from them near cash machines in Wigan.

A 17-year-old girl who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was due to appear before Wigan and Leigh Magistratesí Court on Saturday 24 October 2009 charged with theft and fraud.

A thief pretended to be deaf without speech to steal money from people using cash machines after holding a clipboard, which was shown to the customer while gesturing for their help.

The ATM screen would then be covered with the clipboard and the money grabbed as it was ejected from the machine.

The Deaf and Dumb Society has not authorised anyone to collect money around cash machines in Wigan and anyone who is approached by people claiming to be charity collectors in the area is asked to call Wigan Public Service Team on 0161 856 7040 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
