Sports Fund Launched For Top Wigan Athletes
Lft to Rt: WLCT Chief Executive Rodney Hill, track start Jenny Meadows, Leader of Wigan Council Lord Peter Smith and Wigan Rugby League legend, and President of Wigan Borough Sports Council, Phil Clarke.

JENNY Meadows has become the first recipient of the new Wigan Borough Sports Performance Fund.

Fresh from her fantastic bronze medal win in the World Championships, the 800m runner shared her career highlights and aspirations to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 games at the Wigan Borough Sports Council’s Annual General Meeting.

At the event Jenny became the first person to benefit from a £750 windfall from the new Wigan Sports Performance Fund and was presented with the award by Lord Peter Smith, Leader of the Council, and Rodney Hill, Chief Executive of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.

The event organised by Wigan Borough Sports Council and supported by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit saw more than 40 local sports clubs in attendance.

Andy Clayton, joint chair of Wigan Borough Sports Council, said: “It was fantastic to see so many clubs attend the meeting and hear Jenny speak about how volunteers, club and her family have supported her throughout her career.”

Jenny said: “I am proud that I come from Wigan and it has always provided me with training facilities such as Robin Park and Haigh Hall necessary to become the athlete I am today.

“This Sports Performance Fund is fantastic and will undoubtedly support athletes just like myself that need financial support to keep training and competing at national and international level.”

The Wigan Sports Performance Fund is supported by Manchester Airport and will support athletes who are competing at a national level and are living in Wigan Borough.

Athletes can apply for a grant of up to £750 that will provide valuable financial support towards training and competition costs.
