Elections: we’ve ticked all the boxes

It could be many months before a General Election is called, but council officials in Wigan Borough are busy with preparations.

Electoral Registration Officer, Joyce Redfearn, and her staff are already working hard to make sure that all eligible residents can have their say on polling day. They will be sending forms to households in the borough this Autumn to compile a new electoral register that will be the basis for next year’s elections, including the local elections in England in May.

By completing and returning the form, local voters will be making sure they will be able to have their say on what matters to them.

Joyce Redfearn, Electoral Registration Officer for Wigan, said: “It’s simple to register, all you have to do is complete the annual canvass form that will be coming through your letter box over the coming months, and you’ll be able to help choose the people that make the decisions which affect your everyday life.”

“For some, this may be the first General Election that they get to take part in and may be concerned about what to do. You can find out more by calling 01942 827168 or go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.”

Karen Quaintmere, Head of Electoral Administration for the Electoral Commission, said: “There’s a General Election coming between now and June 2010, and local elections in England are confirmed for 6 May 2010. If you’re not registered to vote, then you can’t make a decision about who represents you in Westminster and on your local authority. Secure your voice on the issues that matter to you now: it only takes a few minutes.”
