Wigan Burglars Feel Full Force of Storm
Wednesday 29th July, 2009

Sixteen people were arrested across Wigan borough last week (20-24 July) as part of Operation Storm, a police crackdown on burglars.

Officers carried out raids on properties of suspected burglars over the week to search for stolen property and other evidence linking the occupants to criminal activity.

Neighbourhood Policing Teams also maintained a high-profile presence in areas blighted by burglary to deter offenders, and visited residents’ homes to give out crime prevention advice.

In addition, Operation Storm was supported by a high-profile publicity campaign where banners were put up at supermarkets across the borough urging people to report criminal or suspicious activity to help ‘bang up burglars’.

Detective Inspector Jon Keeley of Greater Manchester Police’s Wigan Division said: “Burglary is a priority for Greater Manchester Police and we are taking the fight to the offender. Residents can be assured that this is only the first of a whole range of enforcement activity that will be carried out over the coming months.

“People can continue to provide police with information either by contacting us directly on 0161 872 5050 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. This information could be the vital piece of the jigsaw that will help us to successfully convict burglars and stop them inflicting further misery on our communities."
