Amongst an album of family photos from ca 1900, when my great-grandparents lived in Newton-le-Willows, is this photo, under which is written 'Arthur Bullock (Tenor & Violinist)'.

A possible candidate is this person, the brother of Ernest Bullock [+]:

1901 Census - Arthur F Bullock (age 21), 116 Standish Gate, Wigan, 'Teacher of Music & Celloist'

Does anyone have any other information or related photos from around this period which might confirm or disprove this ? TIA

Dave.

[+] "Bullock, Sir Ernest (1890-1979), organist and music teacher, was born in Wigan, Lancashire, on 15 September 1890, the youngest child of Thomas Bullock and his wife, Eliza Stout. He had one sister, the eldest of the family, and four brothers, and both his parents died while he was still at school. As a small boy he joined the choir at Wigan parish church, an event that proved decisive by bringing him into the care of E. C. Bairstow, then organist at Wigan..." If you check out lancashire bmd, you will find there was an Alice Maud, and an Arthur Felix Bullock born 1878, mothers maiden name Stout, so Arthur was a twin, then in 1890 Ernest James Bullock was born with the mothers name also Stout.

Many thanks. This is another photo, also described as 'Arthur Bullock': the uniform & busby is very similar to that in a photo ca 1910 of the Newton C Troop Lancashire Hussars, but appears to have been taken a few years before the first photo.

The problem is basically one of corroboration, which ideally other photographic evidence might help - but any ideas welcome.

Dave.

P.S. There's also an interesting story about Arthur Bullock, possibly not that well-known, because he changed his name and later emigrated to Canada.
