Aye, it's a good piece of film. I was surprised at the height of the pier, that would be a proper diving board for the summer months!! There are quite a few more Wigan clips on the same site. I did a job behind Trencherfield Mill, and they're knocking down some fire damaged buildings, and the base to another mill chimney was tucked away in side! Took a cheeky pic on mi phone!! |

The 'original' Wigan Pier was further along the canal, behind where B&Q is now. |

Tonker – I was taking to a group of young QPR fans on Friday teatime who had come up to Wigan for the first time for Saturdays match
nice set of lads and in conversation one of them asked me
‘Is Wigan on the coast’?
I said ‘No, the seas about twenty miles away. why?’
He said .....’well you’ve got a pier haven’t you?’
I didn’t even begin to explain! |

This would make sense because they used to say Wigan pier could be seen from the railway line, and some passenger would shout out I can see the pier and others would say by the crin where not in Southport already are we.
And its also where Wigans very own petrified tree is located, the petrified tree that was chucked off the belt just before it was dropped onto a coal barge.
The remainder of the old Wigan petrified tree next to B&Q fence.

Only just seen this. Tonker is correct that there was a pier by where B&Q is this was for Pemberton Colliery Company. There was also a pier where the current one is for the Winstanley Colliery Company. Both were in operation in the 1840's |
