Is it possible to obtain information off a hard drive if it has been formated? Someone told me to destroy anything that is on the hard drive, you would have to smash it up, as the data is still there somewhere....

Yes. Anyone who knows what they are doing can get stuff from there using specialist programmes.

If you delete a file, or format a disk, then that file is still on the disk until another file writes over it. All you are doing by deleting a file is giving the computer permission to use that disk sector to write something else. Even then stuff can still be retrieved.

What he said ^ ^ ^.

You can download file erasing progs, such as Eraser, from www.snapfiles.com, which lets you overwrite it as many times as you choose. How well it works, I am not sure, but it was what I used a while ago. Just take the disk to bits and throw it on a fire if you're that worried...

Hi Thanks for the info. however my friend isn't very computer literate. So He is looking for someone to do it for him. I told him to look in the local papers as there are plenty of people advertising their services re. computer problems. If any one knows of anyone? Please let me know.

You made no mention of that in the first post... If you would have said, I could have possibly pointed you in the right direction... Try the Computer Store @ Pemberton?
