Hi ,a question for you IT wizards.

Three years ago I bought a genuin windows XP home operating system
complete with key.

Nowthen, I have loaned that disc to someone, but have not got it back.

As I have two computers, I have just bought another Windows home setup disc and installed it on my No 2 PC.

Can I use this new disc to install windows afresh on my No 1 PC, but use the original key No from my lost disc, which is installed on the machine already. I hope this makes sense, or in other words is the OS disc tied to its own product key ?

Simple answer - YES

It's the product key which should only be used on one computer.

I don't know if anybody else has had this problem, but it's happened to me a few times at work.

It also sounds like your situation too.

I have had to reinstall XP on a few old PCs at work - PCs approx 3 to 4 years old.

The PCs still had the XP Product Key stickers on the side of them.

The CD I was using was XP Service Pack 2, but the PCs were oginially installed with the first version of XP i.e. no service pack.

The old Product Key didn't work with the newer version of XP.

In the end I had to phone Micro$oft and get the PCs activated 'over the phone'

Cheers.
