I remember reading an article in one of the editions of Past Forward about Poolstock, it mentioned the time when Poolstock was a village on an island within an area of water and boggy marshland before the area was drained and the land built on.

I've had a quick look in the archives and found this A Poolstock Childhood written by Pauline Walker, it mentions the island, though it doesn't say how the name came about.

I can't remember which edition the article was in and there's no search facility to pinpoint articles, and it may well have been in an edition earlier than 1999, which Spring of that year is the earliest on line.

No not a traffic island but apparently an island situated within an area of mud bog, a place that only the locals knew which route to take and which clumps of reeds to step onto, the unknowing disappearing under the mud.
