Soz Stuart, I missed your 1st Mar 18-23 post.

I have a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Mechanical Engineering, and that’s probably the minimum qualification you would need.
Some companies of course may require a degree.
It’s horses for courses, depends on the company and the product you’re designing.
