When I 1st started for the NCB in 1969 we went on a visit to Hapton Valley Colliery and went on the coal face there and I think the face was about 28 inches high and they used a plough to cut the coal. One run of the plough cut approx 3 inches of coal.You never got told off for lying down on the job
