riocaroni, the length of time depends on which school you are referring to. But, neither school only lasted around twelve years.

The old Wigan Girls' High School building, which is on Wigan Lane, is still standing; it is now Mab's Cross Primary School - also referred to as Mab's Cross Community Primary School. This school opened as WGHS around 1916; so it has been a school for more than one hundred years - and, hopefully, it is going to be there for at least the next one hundred years as it is a very nice building.

The Wigan Girls' High School, which became Whitley High School, was built in the 1960's (circa 1965) and closed in 1990. Shortly after closing as a school, the building was badly damaged by fire and it was demolished a short time after.
As many people on WW probably know, there is no school there now as it was decided by certain people that houses would be built on the land. Some schools (Whitley High, Whelley Middle, Gidlow Middle...) in and around Wigan were demolished at around the same time as, it was understood, there was no longer a need for so many schools as the birth rate was much lower than in the previous decades.
