Has anyone heard of 'owd Hannah'? My mam and dad told me two separate stories that happened to them in their youth in the 1940's. My parents were born next door to each other in Wallgate. My mam was born in the Coffee House and Dad next door in the Coffee House Inn and somewhere nearby there was a alleyway that lead to the back of the property. Dad said there was one day each year when you walked down the passage and you could not hear the echo of your clogs and that was the day Hannah walked. A murder victim, she was seen first by mam on a very misty dark day. She watched her walk to the lock keepers gate towards the canal. She saw her in Victorian garb and she walked through the locked gate towards the water with my mam in hot persuit as she thought it was someone committing suicide. She saw her disappear into the water, but there was no splash. She ran for help but none of the adults, including her parents would come. They knew it was Hannah but never talked about it. Dad saw the same thing years later. He was walking down wallgate with the local bobby who rushed over ready to dive in, till he remembered the date. I was never told the date though.
