I think things changed at the same time that councils took over parking enforcement, but the Sunday trading laws allowing Sunday trading were a big thing in the parades stopping, because a lot more traffic was held up on Sundays during the parades, because there was a lot more traffic on the roads on Sundays.

On about when a parade was approaching, and the first thing you heard in the distance was the thumping of the big bass drum, and that sound would make a motorists heart sink with the words of "shit, there's a bloody walking day on, weeer is it"

Then you would listen to where the sound was coming from and try a work your way around it, in my case I would avoid one walking day, only to be trapped by another one, as regards brass band music and the marching bands, I like them
