I started picking up litter because of the amount of those small aluminium gas cannisters that were being left overnight, these get pressed down into the grass and do not degrade so if we don't pick them up they will be there forever. The bushes around the park act as huge air filters so when its windy and plastic bags and paper is blowing about they get trapped in the trees and it looks a mess. Its not a big deal to collect a bit of litter while the dog is mooching about. The biggest problem on our park is with these shelters the council erected some time ago. They attract teenagers at night making a racket leaving rubbish broken bottles setting fire to wheelie bins. I contacted the MP and suggested they be cut down but it fell of deaf ears.
