At the evening rushes, the producers thought the last scene at the airport didn't look right. The airplane looked, sterile, dead, so they ordered the director to reshoot it the next day with actors as mechanics, working on it. Unfortunately the plane was a cutout, 2/3 normal size. It would look ridiculous if actors stood next to it. So they reshot it, using hastily summoned dwarfs clad in overalls to portray the mechanics.

Agreed. One of of the greatest movies ever.
