Quite a few local kids' football teams from various clubs have the 'Supported by Wigan Council' logo on their kits.
What it usually means is that one of their local ward councillors has allocated some 'Brighter Borough' funds to provide kits, footballs and other equipment, which teams find very helpful. Amounts involved are usually around £250 to £500 per grant.
It has got nothing to do with the lease of Little Lane to Winstanley Warriors, which is another situation altogether, and one which I personally don't agree with on principle. Public open spaces such as football pitches should not be hived off to a select and limited group for their exclusive use. If they are, I believe it is a legal requirement that the pitches are still accessible for 'lads and dads' type kickabouts, although not for organised matches and training.
