Samster, I think the worst thing that could have happened for England's immigration policy was the Channel Tunnel!!

Australia has the enviable advantage of being an island far away from just about everybody else. Long way to get to in a boat.

Australia does have over 135 different nationalities, a lot of refugees but nowhere near the problems that Europe is having with the influx of Eastern European refugees/illegal immigrants. Plus the borderless EEC??

Australisa's clampdown on illegal immigrants got the Liberal party back in at the last election. Keep all those potential terrorists out etc..... Not everyone agrees with putting illegal refugees in detention centres, woman and children too, for years until they have been 'processed' all at taxpayer's expense. It's inhumane.
