If tha'd lived in a terraced 'ouse wi'a back yard, it probably 'ad a back wall wi'a gate in it!

On the 1861 census I had family living in 20 Adelaide St - back. I recently posted a map of Adelaide st (1907) and you can see that there were separate dwellings - literally the back walls divided 2 houses. They would have been accessed through a narrow passage - this is halfway down the street on the left hand side. In later years they seemed to have been relabelled as Bimsons and then Simpsons yard. Just a theory, I'll flick through censuses for the same year to see if there are any references to Back Wallgate or Wallgate back.

1861 census lists Back Wallgate in St. Thomas's parish.
