Arley Hall.. Wigan Golf Club

As a member we get a very good and informative news letter every month, below is an extract from this months can anyone on wigan world add any more information on this article.

personally I can't see this as being true as it is quite a distance but they did build follies all around the Hall so who knows.

any info would be appreciated




In his book The Wigan Century The History of Wigan Golf Club 1898 t0 1998 Jack Winstanley refers to an underground passage running from Arley Hall to Blackrod Church. This rather intrigued me so I decided to do some research with a view to finding out whether this was possible. My starting point was to see if I could find anywhere from which the tunnel could reasonably start. I’d been down in the cellars previously and knew that parts of them are bricked up so I decided that looking for drawings of the building could be a great help.
The Archive Room seemed to be the obvious place to look. I found a number of drawings but I couldn’t locate any at all which showed the cellars.

There's always stories about 'underground passages', and you'll find that most of them are bollox!
Any underground passage between Arley Hall and Blackrod would have quickly filled with water!!

Tonker - Don't be so touchy! You are correct in that part of the Wigan Golf Club at Arley Hall is in Bolton, but the history of the club is definitely Wigan-Sir Francis Sharp Powell was a member-he of the statue in Mesnes Park. Lance Todd was a member-remembered at every RL Cup Final, and several others whose connection with Wigan is inseperable and who ran well known businesses in the town eg David Whelan Sports businesses, Bakers Jewellers,Ellseys Vinegar, and others! You should read Jack Winstanleys Book " The Wigan Century"-they have a copy in the History Shop I believe- it is most interesting if you know the history of the town.

There's this report from the Wigan Archaeological Society which mentions tunnels to bring water to a mill. Though you may well have seen it blackrodweaver.

Thanks for that Ayrefield but yes have seen it. Drawn a blank really . no doubt tunnels existed to the follies from the Hall and possibly to the toll gates on Arley Lane to Blackrod. Other than that nothing, Will keep looking. Had hoped local historians on here might shed some light on them.

Aspull Local Board was formed in 1876. The Local Board was superseded by an Urban District Council in 1894.

So Arley Hall and Arley which was represented by the above councils is actually Aspull History.
