peter48,
A couple of weeks ago I was out with my camera and got a great photograph of two Bald-Headed Eagles. Lucky to get near them.

So is mine,I'm out every day with my canon, down to the beaches or the lagoons, great bird and other wildlife here!

Posted by: spacebar (456) Report abuse
I too love getting out and about with my camera. It makes me aware of everything going on around me, wanting to get the right image, and gives me the excuse to travel widely to find new inspiration!

I am seriously thinking of buying a Nikon Coolpix camera....preferably a purple one.....the 1300 one is supposed to be a good one....your thoughts will be helpful....

iPad and Nexus users click here for bottom of page

Posted by: peter48 (2735)  Report abuse
You can't go wrong with Nikons lizzie
Although the canon brigade would beg to differ
A lot depends what you want out of your photography, if its just for snapping things here and there the cool pix is a good camera
If you want to get serious about it, your better off paying a little extra and getting an SLR be it Nikon or Canon
That way you can add lenses and the like to it
Hope this is useful to you

When you come to think of it

Photography is very important to the life of communities and countries
If we didn't take pictures there would be no record of what things were like
I'm only sorry I didn't take it more serious when I was younger, imagine going round and photographing streets and people back in the 50s and 60s
What a record we would have of our communities
Alas I didn't and now I regret it

Posted by: lizziedownunder (5854)  Report abuse
Ditto Peter.....I have put a picture of my Dad on albums and it is the old sepia, with a little enhancement from my iPad edit and it came out a little sharper....my son in law is an avid snapper and his camera is a big un with all the bells and whistles......

Posted by: kathpressey (3974)  Report abuse
i have a Lumix . it's a small camera with a 16x zoom. it does me pretty well . i got it 2nd hand and cheap. sometimes I think about treating myself to a better one but this is easy to use and fits in a pocket. i'm holding it on that photo I put on the thread about what do people look like.

I am thinking of getting a camera and I have seent eh Nikon D3200. Does anyone know if this is a good camera to start with?

Posted by: cordyline (3857)   Report abuse
Gareth
Nikon D3200 is a very good camera, all you'll ever need; it's higher spec than mine

Don't be tempted to buy extra lenses; the one supplied is perfect

Read This

Ken knows his stuff

I always set my dial to 'P' and fire away

Posted by: cllr gareth fairhurst (5394) Report abuse
Thanks Cordy. The sales staff was trying to sell me a primer lens, or something. A 50mm. They said it was a sharper picture.

Posted by: cordyline (3857)   Report abuse
Get the standard camera ! it's a deluxe outfit
You can decide on extra lenses later

On my Nikon I have a 35mm; no zoom etc, it's the nearest lense to the old film type cameras [which equates to the old 50mm] that's all I ever use

My mate has similar lense to the one on the Nikon D3200
He's tried my 35mm on his camera and can't see the difference in quality

Buy the D3200; read Rockwell and a few Nikon forums

Enthusiasm is the main factor in photography, amateur or professional not extra lenses and gizmos

Posted by: cllr gareth fairhurst (5394) Report abuse
Cordyline, you have been a great help and I will order it tomorrow.

Posted by: cordyline (3857)   Report abuse
Good; you will like it !!

Do you know how to get photos from camera to the internet btw ?

Posted by: peter48 (2735)  Report abuse
Make sure you go round granite island lizzie
Everytime we go down there we are made to walk around the island
The kids hate it
I take them to the cafe and wait for the rest to walk it lol

Posted by: peter48 (2735)  Report abuse
Gareth
You cant go wrong with a nikon
I have 3 D40, D80, and a D90 with various lenses
Those 50mm prime lenses are good but are mainly used for portraits, they are limited in what you can do with them
As cordy says, go with the one they give you with the camera and take it from there

Posted by: cordyline (3857)   Report abuse
I bought my used D90 on ebay; was looking for a D40 but noticed the sellers were moving up from D40 to D90

It was in a neighbouring town so I was able to go and pay cash on collect
It's possible to check how many photos a camera has taken using an EXIF program
Mine was hardly used when I got it
Shutter count: 1699 when bought 29 Sept 2010

Nikon say they are good for 100,000 photos

Posted by: peter48 (2735)  Report abuse
I use the D90 now and am really pleased with it far and away the best camera i have had
I'm a member of my local photographic society and most there are nikon users

Posted by: lizziedownunder (5854)  Report abuse
will do Peter.....we only do the half walk these days......leave the full walk to the younguns....

Posted by: cordyline (3857)   Report abuse

I have now taken 6,200 photos since I bought it second hand

Peter thanks for the comments too.

Photobucket
Photoshop Express

Posted by: peter48 (2735)  Report abuse
I'm not a big fan of photobucket, the photos tend to lose some of their resolution
Its Flickr for me although you can only upload 200 pics for free then if you want more you have to upgrade to pro which i have done. so its flickr for me

Posted by: cordyline (3857)   Report abuse
I've looked at photobucket and Flickr photos side by side and can't see the difference in quality

Didn't realise but I'm a member at Flickr

Remember when - you had to choose your film speed before setting off for a shoot. Use a light meter to be able to set your F stops and shutter speed. Use a focus ring for definition. Wait till you finished the roll before processing. Load the film into the developing tank in complete darkness. Process the film and hang up to dry. Have a special dark room to be able to use an enlarger to create prints. All for a black & white print.

Today - point, shoot, print and send round the world in a matter of minutes, all in glorious colour.

How times have changed !

Before you ask Lizzie... please fell free to download any photograph of mine that I post. You have permission for all of them.

Lovely shot Dave....probably cooling off...😊👍

Posted by: --oy-- (986)  Report abuse
Aye it was a bit warm :)

It's an area of open meadow just a few minutes walk from the centre of Oxford...

Port Meadow

"The meadow is an ancient area of grazing land, still used for horses and cattle, and has never been ploughed - at least for around 4,000 years. In return for helping to defend the kingdom against the marauding Danes, the Freemen of Oxford were given the 300 acres (120 ha) of pasture next to the River Thames by Alfred the Great who founded the city in the 10th century. The Freemen's collective right to graze their animals free of charge is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and has been exercised ever since."

Beautiful rose Lizzie. Excellent macro Oy. I haven't seen any dragonflies yet this year.

I shot this yesterday in Wigan. His name is Bruce Airhead. Half way through his act he spotted me with my camera, said "Oh photos!" then came over and struck a few poses

dave b, You said: "Been some dramatic sunsets this week ..."

Lovely pictures, liked the 2nd in particular, pictures like these always remind of Japanese Art work.

I find that Autumn and Spring produce a lot of dramatic sunsets (and sunrises.) Here's one of the 7th October (not as good as yours):

Posted by: dave b (1175)  Report abuse
Good pic Neil, it was only my 3rd attempt at sunsets ,just kept playing about with settings ,think the white balance is set on shade or cloudy to bring out the colours.
Your spot on with the japanese feel to the photo.

Posted by: neilrigby (27) Report abuse
Dave, I take quite a lot of sunsets, as I want to create a calender with a good sunset for each month from where I live.

I find that photo-ready sunsets only last a few minutes and in 10 minutes big changes can happen. I take a lot at different exposures and I am pleased if I get one good one. I usually need to set my camera with exposure compensation EV -1/3 to -1 otherwise colour and details get lost.

I started a topic on the forum called Last Light last year and I (and others) have been adding to it since then. It is here:

Who do I ask for tips my wife surprised me and said se would like a camers, so I got her this what do you think?

IT'S A CANNON POWERSHOT SX410 any comments will be helpful.

Posted by: GOLDEN BEAR (2499)  Report abuse
HELLO arrow it is a
cannon power shot sx 410 help!

Posted by: arrow (734) Report abuse
Hi Golden Bear. I've used Canon PowerShots for over 10 years. Never an SX410 but the recent ones are fairly similar. They aren't great indoors but outside in good light they are good. When taking photos indoors or in dull conditions watch out for a little red flashing camera symbol on the screen, that means there isn't enough light and the shutter speed will be slow which usually results in blurry photos.
What types of photography is your wife interested in? Flowers, landscapes, people or (like me) anything and everything?
If she has taken some photos already please post some. If there are any she isn't happy with tell us why and we may be able to help.

Posted by: GOLDEN BEAR (2499)  Report abuse
Thank you arrow,
As I say she is only just starting she has been interested for a long time have just talked with her and she is like you she has said she wants to take anything and everything that catches her eye, as for the red flashing we note that has not happened , she has taken lots of photos at Christmas down south with g/children indoors and they are all ok.
Finally arrow I have to admit something embarrassing ,I'm a bit of a thicky I have trouble trying to get photos onto WW,
BUT THANK YOU AGAIN FROM MARGARET AND MYSELF GB/
