the kench down the pit was the section of the tunnel(the Rock)which was left after the coal had been extracted at both ends of the coal face on an advancing coal face before it was cut out for the steel arches(explosives or machine cut).The arched roadway could be about 15-25ft behind the coal seam being extracted so the rock face was the kench
