Halloween will soon be with us Pumpkins are for sale now but I wonder how many millions of pounds worth will be binned against the amount which will be eaten

I thought the same Peter P. The town is awash with pumpkins. Most will go to waste. I can't abide Halloween anyway.

This commercial trend of today is so unlike the hallowe'en of the 1940/50s. Then, there were no pumpkins, trick or treat or elaborate costumes. Simple things sufficed such as apple bobbing both in a bowl of water or hanging in rows on string tied to a length of clothes line. Turnips were hollowed out to make the masks. If turnips couldn't be afforded an empty jam jar with a candle.
I see Tesco are to stop using 'best before dates' on many items in an attempt to reduce food waste

Blame the supermarkets for all the hype...kids don’t know any different...progress I’m afraid

Supermarkets trying to save waste by selling plastic pumpkins and being slated for doing so

Plastic ones can be reused each year. Not all plastic is bad if it is recycled properly at the end of it's life

Animals love pumpkin waste, so all is not in vain.
