We've got a cracking toaster i-spy, after years and years of the blooming things only toasting one side, we finally found one that toasts both sides equally. And it will do crumpets!
It's a Russell Hobbs Legacy 4 slice toaster and it's a cracker! Very retro style which matches my kitchen
Now, can anybody recommend a good filter coffee machine please?

Most modern toasters are too shallow and about 1/4 of the slice is not in the toaster

I agree Peter. We use the Warburtons small sized Toastie, which fits fine.

The toaster I have is a 30 odd year old Rowenta. It toasts beautifully except that the hold down and pop up mechanism is broken and is now an obsolete part. The elements are the wound round a ceramic core type, the best ones to have. Will probably see me out.

Hugh, your not the only one to have left Wigan, Joe (who's spelling you corrected) lives in Wales, and I live in Suffolk and haven't lived in Wigan for more than 30 years.
I certainly wouldn't say my life has been much improved since I left Wigan, I miss the place, the friendship of Wigan people, and their lovely sense of humour.
I have a very good life, but it's different, not an improvement than I had in Wigan. we moved because my husbands job took him to London, and but for that we would still be there.

I don't think I have ever found a good toaster.
I bought one of those expensive 'Dualit' machines.
one of these
After some years, when an element had gone , I got replacement element, but upon opening up the toaster, the innards were so corroded, that I set the machine aside pending the time to do a major re-firb job on it.
Then for 99p on ebay, I acquired a strange toaster.
A Swiss machine, labelled FUST PRIMOTECQ: apparently they are expensive, and this one was like new.
One of These
At first, it was a belter: really fast, and the heaters are of the ceramic tubular type, as seen on electric radiant room heaters.
The downside, is that such a heater is a concentrated heat source, relying on reflector to heat the required target: fine when it is new, and the reflector is highly polished, but can find no convenient way of keeping them in such a state in service in the toaster. So now it toasts a band across an otherwise untoasted slice, and I am again in the market for a toaster.

Jazzy,
I never said or thought for one moment that I am the only person to have left Wigan. I merely said that my life had improved since I left Wigan, which it has. However, this is no reflection on Wigan as a town or the people who live in Wigan, most of whom are very pleasant, genuine, hard working people. All my family, both sides, are from Wigan and some still live there.
You told me to get a life. My reply was and still is that I have a life - an exceptionally interesting one.

Hi joe and jo anne. Things a bit tough here at the moment. My daughter was in Papworth Hospital for 4 days. She's now on oxygen therapy, for when she's asleep, we had an oxygen concentrator and a tank of oxygen for emergencies delivered on Friday. So we are getting to grips with that.
Unfortunately she had a fall while she was in Papworth, and following a CT Scan,as she had banged her head, the tumour behind her eye was found to have doubled in size following a comparison with her last one, which was sent over to them by Ipswich hospital.
As Papworth is a specialist hospital, they have no eye department there and she has been referred back to her usual consultant (at Ipswich) for an MRI. We are waiting for an appointment for that. Hopefully very soon.
So, to be honest, I'm not in the right mood for a bit of fun, or setting the world to rights, or if we stay in Europe or leave. It's not very important to me at the moment.
Love and hugs to you both.

Thank you Bill, Joe and Anne for your kind words. My daughter was in the Papworth Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre for tests, as she has breathing difficulties when she's asleep. Apparently her oxygen levels drop to around 75% once she's asleep, so at least we have a solution for that now, with the oxygen therapy. Fingers crossed.
The tumour thing was quite a shock, as she has had 3 years of chemo, and although it hadn't gone, it did shrink considerably. Though she now has a cateract on that eye and she has been blind from birth in her other eye. So her vision is very limited.

A phone call or letter would be nice then at least we would know when it's to be. If we don't hear by Wednesday next week, we will give them a prod. It's hard just being in limbo. My brain just doesn't seem to be working.

My daughter won't get better, the disease she has is incurable. It's treated in a similar way to leukemia. The best outcome would be to get her into remission, but unfortunately the treatment hasn't worked on her, and they have been unable get her into remission despite their best efforts. The treatment itself has also caused some other serious conditions, so the outlook is quite grim.
We have got an appointment for her MRI now. It will be on 12 April. Apparently the machine at Ipswich is being updated, and 2 mobile machines have taken over in the interim. Unfortunately, they cannot accommodate a wheelchair user so we have to wait until the new machine is commissioned.
Her extension is being started in May, and we have everything crossed that there is no delay to that, as we think it will raise her spirits. She gets very depressed, which is understandable I think.
But it would be true to say we are hanging on with our fingertips.

Well, this morning, my Swiss toaster (mentioned earlier in this thread) finally failed. With no way to keep the reflecting surfaces clean inside a toaster, it has progressively cooked up its own innards.
So, I will rate it a design failure.
How is your latest ASDA toaster performing, i-spy?
So that is me, again in the market hunting for a new toaster.
The one rated best in the review that search found, and is also Amazon's best seller, still has dozens of reviewers complaining that it cannot toast evenly, and is very limited with respect to slice sizes. (about £20+)
Can't decide if t go tut supernarket n ger a cheapy this evening, or get the two slice Dualit fo just over a tun!
Replied: 27th Oct 2016 at 12:55
Just concluded some on line searching. Why on earth are the vast majority of toasters manufactured in such a way as to be too small to take normal bread sizes? It is utterly bizarre!
Replied: 27th Oct 2016 at 14:11
Asda version still doing the job. Can't fault it at the price.it has defrost, re heat and cancel buttons, takes the thickest slices and works a treat.

Got a cheapy (£10) from ASDA.
They had them for as little as £4.50.
I chose my selection because it claims to have longer slots. they look regular to me, though I can see from online comments that toaster slots seem to have been reduced in size of late.
Just about to make its maiden toasting.

I don't think that I am going to get on with this ASDA toaster.
It will take slices from a 400g loaf, though I doubt it will accept them from a standard (800g) loaf.
It does toast evenly.
The fly in the ointment: it takes ages to toast a piece of bread. When hungry, I am not the most patient person. But, slow toasting means it dries the toast considerably, resulting in something of a rusk-like texture. It is personal taste, I guess. No doubt some prefer toast like this. I like mine well seared on its outer surface, but still moist within.

It's probably an 'EU Standard' toaster. They were on about restricting the power of domestic electric appliances in the idiotic belief that it saved power. It only means the appliance is on for longer, using the same amount of energy, resulting in dry 'cardboard' toast in the case of toasters.
I prefer mine golden brown all over and moist inside.

Well, the cheapy (£10) ASDA toaster, which was never very satisfactory, lasted a little over twp years. It failed this morning.
Thinks I will replace with yet another 'Dualit'. Shall get a two slot this time, as there is now only myself to cater for.

I'm breakfasting on porridge until new toaster (Dualit) arrives on Sunday.
I think the cartoon posted by jo anne (23/2/16) sums it up better than words. What crap quality we accept in these basic appliances!
The Swiss toaster, (FUST PRIMOTECQ) which I have mentioned made the best toast whilst it was in pristine condition, but reflectors cannot be kept clean inside of a toaster, they quickly deteriorate.
Where I to design a toaster, I would base it upon the FUST PRIMOTECQ model, but with reflectors which could be easily slid out of the machine to keep them clean and polished.
That would wipe the floor with the competition!

Anyhow, Dualit toaster now in place. Good quality toast. Just a wee bit pricey, given longevity does not live up to expectation.
