Chlorinated Chicken
Can't say I fancy it, wonder what it'll taste like.

"• Americans safely eat upwards of 156 million such chickens each week."
Presumably it can't be a killer.

just like washing fruit. Wash the chicken first.

we all drink chlorinated water every day, just part of the treatment process.

Never wash raw chicken as this can cause campylobacter, which is a bacteria-related illness and can be fatal.

Heard last night, (think it was on Newsnight) that it is essentially an issue of animal welfare, and if UK agrees, it will lead to trade which will put UK poultry-rearing at a competitive disadvantage.
Seems that here, both consumer and provider wish to retain our approach of keeping the animal healthy throughout its life, as opposed to rescuing a messy situation with antibiotics and bleach to render it safe to eat.

Very true priscus, apparently the animal welfare is far below our standards thus the necessity of using chlorine after the slaughter process eliminating any bugs.

I think the UK has learned the hard way of the perils to which we are exposed if we neglect animal welfare.
Variant CJD killed an unknown number of our citizens, played a part in bringing down Margaret Thatcher, and all but destroyed the country's meat industry.
I guess we are not keen to see a return to the bad old days.
After all, isn't chicken already wonderfully cheap.

If it is labelled country of origin then does the customer not make the choice. If it is 20% cheaper all will soon be forgotten I'm afraid. It is the same at present. Everyone wants the hens running round a farmyard laying eggs in a barn until they have to pay for the produce then money rules OK. Sad but true.

There's a place near Preston that slaughters 500,000 chickens a week. All Halal. Would they still be Halal if they were chlorinated?

I'll ask the next Imam I see in the supermarket.
