‘Leigh ....folding!’

Started by: wigvet (3549)

Those two words just appeared in a news item as I drove into work and it made me cringe

Yes Leigh have had problems, and some have been of their own making, but they cannot be put out to dry

The greatest travesty in the best spectator sport in the world is that we have abandoned rugby league heartlands in the RL hierarchy’s doomed pursuit of expansionism

From Cumbria’s neglection in preference to Gateshead, to the recent debacle with the Crusaders, the path is littered with corpses along the route.

Leigh deserve better!

Hopefully they can get back on an even keel. It's terrible that they players haven't been paid.

Time for a merger with Wigan.

After all, Leigh is now part of the Wigan Borough.

And what would they be called ruddy i doubt Wigan would want to change their name also Leigh fans wouldn't like it either.Hope they pull through.

They should combine with Salford and or Swinton. I'm afraid times have changed and the area can't support so many Professional Clubs in this economic climate.

I have been to the ground this morning to pay in my weekly £16 which I collect weekly from family members for the Leigh Lifeline, and the Manageress assures me that they haven't been told anything in the Lottery office, there is a fans forum meeting on wednesday next at 7-00 pm which I will be attending when we fully expect to be brought up to date with the situation, it goes without saying of course that I will be on here first thing thursday morning to give you the latest

peawapp,
Hope everything goes well for Leigh. I know there has always (and will always) been rivalry between Wigan and Leigh but no sports-minded person would want to see Leigh go under. As a matter of fact I am sure a Wigan supporter would prefer to see Leigh back in Super League where they belong.

My comment was only tonque in cheek.

But, having said that, the fact remains that there are too many clubs here in the North of England for the number of spectators that are watching the game.

Some them will have to merge before they go to the wall.

The same applies to many of the smaller club's in football.

Would be a sad day if Leigh went to the wall, remember the times we biked from Pem to Leigh in the 50s 20,000 crowds. also the semi final of the rlcc at Swinton, when Mick Sullivan scored the only points of the match. Mick Martyn, Stan Owen, Bill Robinson, Walt Tabern and a Wiganer Martin Dickins captained Leigh that day, were some of the Leigh players. Lets hope they overcome their problems. Re teams to merge its a non runner, ground shareing yes.

the missing name from that pack fordie is derek Hurt, I too was in attendance that day ,went on the saloon with John Monks's coach firm, if my memory serves me well I think Joe Hoskins was the Leigh goalkicker that day and missed a couple that I could have backheeled over,
oh yes and that bloody ref robbed us

it just goes to show with the memories that peawapp and fordie have of LEIGH and other games ,those at rugby league headquaters should and hopefully will help to save one of the founder clubs of rugby league.
