He's the one Wigan need to fear on Saturday night.

A really good player, but it beats me how he got the vote the other year, after only playing half a season, and again this term

Replied: 30th Sep 2011 at 06:53

Michael Monaghan of Warrington should have been in the short list and also the dream team before Roby as he has been outstanding all season and not just half a season.

The last time Roby won it, it was a wrong selection and resulted in a change in the voting system with fellow players now selecting the winner instead of newspaper reporters.

Anyway back on track after the infantile postings

..........Rangi is ‘English’!!!!!!

Rangi Chase has been called up into the England ‘train-on' squad ahead of the 2011 Four Nations

Although born in New Zealand he has never played for the country of his birth and qualifies to play for England on residency grounds!

Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 12:37

wigvet

Why do we need to select any foreign born players when we have all these find young players coming through our academies.

The way Mcnamara is going on, he might as well ignore our own lads and just include the foreign born players.

As for Rangi Chase, how long has he been resident here?

International selection has become a farce.

Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 17:30

Posted by: broady (inactive)

I agree with Ruddy. You should only be allowed to play for the country that you draw your first breath in. Just as an aside I think that James Roby will be crowned Man of Steel later today. Not saying he should be but get a gut feeling that players from Wigan don't get the votes they should from their fellow pros. Jealousy maybe or a dislike of Wigan Rugby. Hope I am wrong.

Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 20:27

New Zealand and Australia have always had a large proportion of players who were not born in their countries, and if the criteria is changed to the breath rule for selection I am sure teams would be picked to play, but I am not convinced about the quality it would provide!
I watched the England v Exiles match at Headingley and Chase was outstanding, while young Tomkins had a very difficult night, two really skilful players but I am sure Sam will get there some time!

Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 20:59

The only difficulty he had in that game was with the idiot element of Leeds supporters who found some warped pleasure in booing a member of their own International team.

Used to have a great deal of respect for the Leeds club and it's supporters but now gone after their treatment of Sam Tomkins.

Prior to Tomkins, it was James Graham when St Helens were better then Wigan a couple of seasons ago.

Broady - 'Remind me about when Trent Barrett was a long odds on favourite and didn't win it'

I will; that was 2007 - when it was voted for by the PRESS
thereafter it is voted for by the players

'players from Wigan don't get the votes they should from their fellow pros'

remind me AGAIN..... who won it last year?

Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 21:32

Obviously I don't watch much Rugby these days but from what I read Sam Tomkins isn't universally admired by both fans of other clubs and his fellow Professionals. Hence the reason I don't think he will win the award. The same thing could never be said against Pat Richards who won the award last year.

As I said earlier you should only be allowed to play for the country that you drew your first breath in. What about the Stand Offs who have played their way through Junior Rugby etc and one will be thrown aside to make way for a guy who has lived in the country three years.
