RL Cup holders ‘out’ already?

Started by: wigvet (3549)

What a farce…...

‘Challenge Cup holders Catalans Dragons are considering their place in the 2019 competition after being ordered to pay a £500,000 deposit to enter.
The French club became the first team from outside England to win rugby league's oldest trophy.
Catalans have asked the Rugby Football League to "reconsider its demand", which applies to all non-English teams.
Owner Bernard Guasch said they want to defend the cup, but added "it would be irresponsible to accept" the decision.
"The players would be very frustrated not being able to defend their title and we hope that we'll have an answer as soon as possible," Guasch said.
The deposit is understood to have been introduced to help cover any dip in revenue raised from the RFL's flagship competition.
While Catalans made history by winning in 2018, the final against Warrington was played in front of 50,672 - Wembley Stadium's lowest Challenge Cup final crowd since World War Two.
Already, fellow French club Toulouse and Canadian side Toronto - the first team from across the Atlantic to play in the Challenge Cup - have decided not to enter the competition. Both teams play in England's second division.

I'm not surprised the crowd was low. From the semu to the final it doesn't give enough time for fans who have to ravel a fair distance and can't do a round trip in one day/ Plus hotels and flight adds a lot to the cost. I'm not surrised Toronto has pulled out.

Don't be down Jarvo. You won at Spurs ( fixed game) but lost at home the next game ( ?? fixed game) You seem to be the punters friend ( especially the Chinese ones)

...Rugby League is a laughingstock.

Deny it if you must.

By the way, Wolves are currently ninth in the PL and average 30,000 at home(that's three times what Wiggin get over three home games).

It'll do me...at the moment.

Three times more than Wiggin Warriors, or three times more than Wiggin Latics? Anyway, give us a date for the end of Rugby League, the year 'll do.

Just looked at the teams and you are correct. It was expensive for reserve team football. Why has the FA Cup been downgraded so much? Used to look forward to May to see the spectacle of the final followed by the Rugby the week after. I think the FA Amateur Cup may have been the week before the FA Cup. I seem to remember a goalie named Harry Sharratt from Abram playing for Bishop Auckland in the Amateur Cup Final.

I regret not going now.

But I was busy on the Electron Beam Welder at work.

Need the holidays this year.

However, Wolves next two evening PL games are when I'm on earlies...

Great win. Next!
