If you stick a tenner on one of your football fancies grimshaw (£5ew if you like) with Willian Hill they will give you a £5 free bet everytime your selections wins a game, bang that on one of your other fancies each time and if you don't come out on top, pack in betting altogether.

Posted by: spacebar (486) Report abuse
Jarvo, Alliss won the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese Opens in the space of 3 weeks in 1958, tied 8th in the Open Championship four times, represented England 10 times in the World Cup of Golf, and played in 8 Ryder Cup teams.
Tell us again what you've won?

Be interesting to see what the cut is at close of play tomorrow

russia ? seen em yesterday, they would find accrington stanley hard to beat.
fraid its the usual suspects at this and any future world cup.

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
Baker boy.

So, who in your view are the usual suspects at this world cup.?

Posted by: roylew (2936) Report abuse
Dj and Spain for me

Posted by: lisalee (12015)   Report abuse
Belgium are the dark horses for me although they’ve got a tough group to qualify from.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
So we've all seen the winners play by now......anybody any the wiser who they are?

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
Tough call chatty.

Not impressed by the south american challenge so far but things can change .

Leaning towards a european winner, thought spain played v well ,we shall see .

Who do you fancy then chatty ?

Posted by: blackrodweaver (523) Report abuse
chatty no ones really impressed me yet, Spain struggling as I type against Iran. so its up for grabs dare I mention England in this post.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
I didn't see the Spain game last night, after the first game they looked as good as anyone.
No one's really clicked as mentioned (bar Russia who have preformed better than their form suggested coming into the tournament, the home nation usually does)
I backed France at the start, and Greizmann for top goalscorer, when either comes good I get a free bet, so just covering my ass with those!
Belgium, some great players, but does anyone ever think they'll ever hear the phrase, here comes "World Cup winning manager Roberto Martinez"?
England's chance as good as anyone at this moment in time, but you could say the same about Southgate.
As they say "It's the hope that kills you"

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
Chatty.

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
Just read that 40,000 fans have travelled from Peru to Russia. Would never have imagined that!!!!

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
A proper punditry line up for the Germany game on ITV, Keano, Red Nev, Evra and Larsson.
Guaranteed to have the ABUs screaming at the box!

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
Who will Keane threaten to decapitate today??

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
I see they moved Bilic away from Keano following Bilics repeated leaning across and touching Roys arm/ shoulder.

I did think Roy was about to deck him at one point.

Spot on chatty ,lots of gnashing of teeth from the a b u wigan branch members.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
I know 'Fergie time' became a popular saying not long after
Richard Keys and Andy Gray reinvented football in the early 90s, but 'never write the Germans off' was very well known way before that when their club and national teams always seemed to pop up with a late winner/ equaliser.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
It's coming home.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
From what I saw last night Portugal will be going home after they meet Uruquay and Spain will probably beat Russia but look way too poor to win the tournament.
Croatia are the dark horses for me!

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
G daughter is on holiday in croatia chatty and reports the the natives are confident .

She could have been under the influence of the odd sherbet of course.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
I will be visiting there myself in a couple of days grimshaw, was hoping their first knockout game would be the Saturday afternoon one in which case I could catch it in a bar and soak up the 'atmosphere' but it looks like they're finishing top of their group so wont be.

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
"But otherwise there was little urgency on display, and no sense the France players had any desire to clinch their third successive win" Stewards Enquiry?? Thank goodness the Super League is on Thursday and I don't have to watch the World Cup continue it's "way home"

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
Oh yea Super League, I recall a few years ago "very little urgency on display" from Leeds Rhinos for most of a couple of seasons, come play off time hey presto!

Don't recall any Steward 'enquiring' about that.

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
chatty, As the leagues are almost finished are you ready to forecast the winner?? I predict Wigan to beat Leeds.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
Not a clue who the winner is, that's the beauty.

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
Uruguay or Croatia though I do hope England do well.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
Hope you're right about England, although Panama only managed to cross the halfway line about 5 times and everytime they did it looked like the ball would end up in the back of the net.

Not gloating but " always a but .

I will Have two in the semis and certain one in the final .

A win win situation already thanks to the advice from chatty that William Hill were offering special bets.

Eat your words laughing stock.

Posted by: laughing gravy (3906) Report abuse
ANOTHER ONE GONE GRIMSHAW I SUPPOSE ONE OUT OF FIVE IS GOOD IN YOUR EYES..

CANT PICK YOUR BLOODY NOSE THEE....

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
If you but understood anything at all about betting and how to structure bets to obtain value your comments would be valid but ive won now with having two in the semis and one in the final so i am v happy thank you .

Posted by: laughing gravy (3906) Report abuse
thats just it grimshaw i've never been one for betting,i only bet when i'm guaranteed to win ask chatty BUT NEVER GET PAID WHEN I DO SO WHATS THE POINT?

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
I have offered to pay the 1p, yes folks it's actually a penny he's been whining on about for over 12 months which he thinks I owe him but don't.
The fact he has me one "ignore"(yea right)and he may have missed my numerous attempts to pay the vast amount I don't actually owe him hasn't dawned on him yet, but that's what happens when you start lying, you end up tying yourself in knots!

COME ON ENGLAND

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
Chatty, At long last we have something in common. We both tipped Croatia for the final almost three weeks ago.

upthetims , i bet you are over the moon with the result, you sad man. the best team won without a doubt.

Posted by: chatty (6158)  Report abuse
Go away Broady, don't you mean I tipped Croatia as dark horses then half a day later you sub conciously picked them after reading my post.

I also stated I had backed France at the start to win it, Portugal would fall to Uruguay, Spain might inch past Russia but they aren't good enough to win it,(they didn't even manage that) and that Martinez and Southgate didn't sound like World Cup winning managers names

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
Toronto?? I live a four day drive away!! I do that drive as often as you" go all that way down the M6 to Wolverhampton"

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
The French are the biggest certainty since shergars derby.

I will give up watching football and betting if they get beat sunday.

I do enjoy when a plan comes together .

Well done chatty and whups for backing France.

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
chatty,
The reason I picked Uruguay and Croatia was at the end of the group stages they were the only ones with a 100% record. Sadly not connected to your selection. When grimshaw says 100% certain to win I, as a rugby fan, have only two words to say. Sheffield Eagles. I think Wigan were 1/14. The only certainty is England won't win. They beat Panama (55th) Tunisia (21st) lost to Belgium(3rd) and lost to Croatia(20th) I thought the goalie did well as did Trippier. Kane disappointed and IMO the rest were average. Hopefully we have seen the last of Young in an England shirt. The figures in brackets are the FIFA ranking of June 2018. I think France are 7th. I am not really bothered who wins but hope it is a good game. Mbappe may be the match winner. These views have nothing to do with my place of residence BTW.

...The Toronto Tit...

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
Whilst I know you aren't familiar with PL football who do you rate highly in the current England team??

Posted by: upthetims (6505) Report abuse

Anyone who plays Young at left fullback or plays him at all are bereft of footballing nous, and that includes Mourinho who hopefully will get sacked shortly

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
I repeat .

France are certainties.

The excellent Modric controlled the pace of the game this evening in the second half AND was deployed further up the pitch but sunday will be a different kettle of fish .

Pogba will have a huge opportunity to influence the game given how the french play

Unlike broady i am bothered who wins given i have France to win me a good few quid .

Posted by: upthetims (6505) Report abuse

Hope you win grimshaw, funny the obsessed one lg has not posted his usual inanity.

ALLEZ LES BLEUS

Posted by: broady (13790)   Report abuse
When I say I am not bothered who wins I mean from a neutral football point of view not with regards to someone winning a bet. I hope the gent in question wins his bet. I have just looked at the odds and Croatia are at tops 4/1 which doesn't suggest the bookies think it is as one sided as Mr. Grimshaw thinks.

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
We shall see broady.

I have won a few sovs already so a French victory will be the icing on a fairly large cake..

Posted by: whups (3061)  Report abuse
grim nothin in life is certain . look at trump & leicester city winning ? .

Posted by: grimshaw (1227)  Report abuse
Surely the French will be far far superior to Croatia whups.

I do take your point that nowt in life is certain.

I recall years ago when 4 pals and myself got a class greyhound from Ireland.

Trialed him in at a flap track in the north east .Drove up there 3 times.he was well held to get him on a good mark and bet him off the boards in his race .the poke was down and 3 lengths clear off the last bend when
the lure cable snapped and came to a juddering halt ,or so the track said when they voided the race

Cue long faces in the car on the long drive home.

Come on the French
