10,619...…lowest home attendance since??

Started by: wigvet (3549)

I see the Warriors website have finally confirmed today that the attendance at last Fridays ‘super 8’ game against Huddersfield of 10,619!

Will this be even worse this Friday against Salford with the paltry support that they have?

Seem to remember WRLFC getting really paltry crowds in late 70's.Mind you this team play the worst brand of rugby that I can remember.including relegation season

10,619 sounds healthy enough
The Wigan average in the first Super League season was 10,152

I was at Central Park in the early 80s at a game when Maurice Lyndsey was running the show and you couldn't swing a cat, looked in the paper the following day for the attendance and it was less than 4 thousand.

Chatty, As you should well know our Maurice had a few turnstiles for himself,he wasn't a bookie for nowt! But totally agree with you regard the attendances,
aussie 94, I too whacked off school that Wednesday afternoon to see that match we managed to get thro onto to Spion Cop those bars down the right hand side we were on those three quarters up absolute bloomin fantastic, That was when our captain ERIC ASHTON WAS SENT OFF FOR KICKING WILKINSON UP THE ARSE HE Wilko HAD BEEN " AT IT " ALL THE MATCH AND ERIC JUST SNAPPED ! That day aussie 94 was the c.c. replay prior to that on the Saturday at headingley my dad took me on unsworths coache's WIGAN'S GEOFF BOOTLE SCORED THE EQUALISER IN THE DYING MINUTES AT THE RIGHT SIDE CORNER PUNCHIE GRIFFITH'S LOBBED IT OVER FROM THE TOUCHLINE, THAT DAY IT RAINED ALL MATCH THE PITCH WAS COVERED IN MUD! IT was a very cold day in FEBRUARY 1961 . ON the WEDNESDAY K.O. 2.00PM WIGAN PLAYED AN ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING GAME OF RUGBY ,WITH TRIES FROM
BOSTON 2,, ASHTON 1,,BOOTLE 1,,EVANS 1,,FENTON 1,, AND LAST GRIFFITH'S THE SCORE WAS WIGAN 32 . LEEDS 7 THERE WERE 2 PLAYERS SENT OFF FOR SCRAPPING ERIC ASHTON AND LEEDS FORWARD ( GEORGE FAIRBANKS??) ALMOST SURE OF HIM, TO THIS DAY SCORES AND SCORES OF WIGAN FANS SAY THE ATTENDANCE RECORD THAT DAY WAS BOKEN,SOME SUGGESTING BETWEEN 50 AND 60 THOUSAND I WAS THERE IS MY CLAIM TO FAME AND HAVE TO SAY IV'E ONLY SEEN THAT SORT OF ATTENDANCE 3/5 TIMES ONLY THOSE WERE THE HALCYON DAY'S!!
have a nice day lads!!!!!!!

The attendance was recorded as 40,033. You missed off Lyon's try. It was eight tries and four goals. If I remember Bill Sayer was sent off in the first game for tripping. I was in the Hen Pen. The replay was on the 15th February 1961.

Hi there Broady/ I don't normally like doing this but if we are on the same lines ,i have to differ with you on the subject of just who was sent off that Wednesday 15th February 61. Ausie 94 brought up this particular item which was the replay against LEEDS in the challenge cup round ,My dad took me to the first meeting which was on an horrible day at HEADINGLEY , we just managed a draw that Saturday tea-time the score was 5 - 5 replay scheduled for the following Wednasday 15th K.O.2.00PM.

The general agreement is that it was the late ERIC ASHTON WHO GOT HIS MARCHING ORDERS AFTER SHALL WE SAY A FRACAS,WITH THE LEEDS FORWARD FAIRBANKS THEY BOTH WERE SENT OFF, WHAT I SAW FROM SPION COP END WAS THAT FAIRBANKS WAS PUTTING IT ABOUT ALL AFTERNOON AND ERIC HAD,HAD HIS FILL AFTER TAKING A BELT ON HIS FACE ERIC TURNED AROUND AND GAVE HIM A MIGHTY KICK UP HIS ARSE ,IT WAS GREAT ,ALAS HE WAS OFF! AS for the match wigan played absolutely superb that day we ran out winner's
32 points - 7 points.
Now as i have said Broady i do not like arguing with mates so what i'm going to do from now is to get mi yed down to get some evidence once and for all , by the way are you and the misse's all oki hope!
Catch you later Broady bye..

GB,
I haven't disagreed with Ashton and Fairbank being sent off. What I did say is that in the drawn game on the Saturday previous Bill Sayer was sent off. We are both fine thanks. Hope everything is hunky dory in your home.
