Kevin O’Loughlin - RIP

Started by: wigvet (3549)

The Wigan Club are saddened to announce the passing of former player Kevin O’Loughlin.

Kevin - heritage number 628 - played for the Wigan Club between 1963-1975 after signing from Warrington Colts and played as a Stand Off but had real utility value to the team.

During his time at Wigan Kevin made 284 appearances with 25 as a substitute, scoring 171 points. He played alongside his brother Keiron in the early 1970’s and is the uncle of current Club Captain Sean.

Speaking about Kevin, his former teammate and current Wigan Players Association committee member Brian Ramsdale said:

“Kevin was one of those quiet members of the squad, but he would say his piece when he had something positive to contribute.

“Whilst he played a lot as a half, he would play well and in any position he was asked. He was an extremely hard player and my recollection is of a Mr Reliable who was at times used as winger, full back, half back and occasionally in the back three of the pack.”

The Club offers its deepest condolences to Kevin’s family and friends at this time.

Sad news. He never took a backward step and played where ever the club needed him. A great servant to the club. R.I.P.

Sad news indeed, Kevin became involved in the amateur game when he retired as a professional. He was a perfect role model for any aspiring player, a gentleman, skillful, hard as nails, never a loud mouth, and generous with his knowledge of the game. A tremendous player for Wigan, who never let anybody down which ever position he played in. Condolences to his family. R.I.P. Kevin.

Ike Southward (Workington and GB winger) was once asked whom was the hardest player he had encountered. He played against very tough Aussies etc but replied Kevin oloughlin. An example to all aspirant young players.RIP.

My deepest condolences to Kevin’s family and friends at this sad time. I must be getting a little forgetful in my old days because I don't remember Kevin playing for Warrington Colts! In those days you went (if good enough) straight from school to Wigan Colts. Maybe Bill can shine more light on the matter, but at the end of the day all you I can say is RIP Kevin.

I remember you oldswintonion, you were a VERY good rugby player and if I may say so "as tough as old boots"! The last time I saw you (10 years) ago was in St Jude's with Billy Hinnigan and I didnt recognise you and asked "does Jimmy Hickey ever come in here? and you replied "you've been sitting at the same table as him for the last half hour"! Take care Paul
